Everyone in the universe knows what Star Wars in, but in case you've been living like a Wookie, here's the deal. The original Star Wars movie is titled "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope." It was written and directed by George Lucas and was originally released simply as "Star Wars" on May 25, 1977. The film marked the beginning of the Star Wars saga and introduced audiences to the iconic characters, including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Darth Vader.
"A New Hope" is the fourth episode in terms of the overall Star Wars saga, but it was the first film to be released. It was followed by two sequels, "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) and "Return of the Jedi" (1983), together forming the original Star Wars Trilogy. These three films are often collectively referred to as the "Original Trilogy" and are considered classics in the science fiction genre.
